Landfill to expand

MILAN TWP. — The Erie County commissioners recently awarded a multimillion-dollar construction bid to expand the government-operated landfill in the Milan area. • The need: The landfill is projected to reach its airspace (limit) in the near future, creating an immediate need for construction of a new cell. • The capacity: The Erie County Landfill currently accepts approximately 150,000 tons of waste per year and has about 30 years left of permitted airspace. Right now, the landfill stands 165 feet above Hoover Road. • The scope: The initial phase of the project will add approximately 3 acres of landfill airspace and enough space for over one year of waste. • The project timeline: Work recently began. The initial phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The full project will provide approximately 11 acres of cell floor and is scheduled for completion by Aug. 31. • The cost: The project will cost about $6.2 million, which the commissioners will pay in cash without borrowing any funds. The winning bid went to R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc. All bids were evaluated by the county's environmental services department.
