Vermilion, Edison among others receiving votes in 1st football poll

The first high school football state poll was released Tuesday and two area teams were among those in the others receiving votes category. Vermilion, which is 3-0 for a second-straight season after a 60-22 win over Willard last Saturday, is ranked No. 13 in Division IV. The Sailors scored at least 60 points in a game for the first time since 2006. Edison, which dropped to 2-1 following a loss to Hopewell-Loudon, is No. 13 in Division V. The Chieftains, who improved to 3-0 with the win over the Chargers, are No. 7 in Division VI. Shelby, a 49-6 winner over Bellevue last week, debuted as the No. 1 team in Division IV. Indian Valley, the defending state champions who beat Perkins in the title game, is No. 3. Glenville, who the Pirates beat in the state semifinals, is No. 4. Liberty Center defeated Edison in a regional final last year en route to finishing runner-up and opened this season as the No. 1 team in Division V. Liberty Center lost the state title game to Ironton, who is No. 4 in the first poll. Oak Harbor, which is 3-0 after a 35-20 win over Port Clinton last week, is No. 2 in Division V. Marion Local, winners of a national-leading 67 straight games, was the only unanimous No. 1, taking the top spot in Division VII. Other No. 1 teams in the polls are Lakewood St. Edward (Div. I), Uniontown Lake (Div. II), Bishop Watterson (Div. III) and Kirtland (Div. VI). 8-man title game in Leetonia The Northern 8 Conference announced in a press release Tuesday that the 8-man league championship game will be played in Leetonia on Nov. 8. The league refers to it as a state championship game sponsored by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association. Leetonia is near Sebring McKinley and Chalker, two members of the N8 Conference. It sits near the Pennsylvania border and is almost two hours east of Sandusky. St. Mary Central Catholic (3-0, 2-0 N8) and Danbury (3-0, 2-0) currently are atop the league standings.
