Vermilion honors Broadway star

VERMILION — Hometown pride filled Vermilion High School on Aug. 28 as Broadway performer John Riddle, a 2008 Vermilion High School graduate, returned to the stage where his musical journey began. His one-night-only performance of "Blue Lady" drew a packed house and raised critical funds for the ongoing restoration of the Harbourtown Fine Arts Center, located in the historic Vermilion Town Hall. Riddle, known for roles such as Hans in Disney's "Frozen" and Raoul in the closing Broadway company of "Phantom of the Opera," captivated the audience with his signature vocals and storytelling. Sharing the stage was his musical director and accompanist, Nicholas Connell, whose arrangements added depth and brilliance to the evening's performance. "This was more than a concert. It was a homecoming," center board president Jim Chapple said. "John's generosity in returning to support the center's mission will leave a lasting impact as we continue restoring this treasured landmark." The event highlighted the power of community support, made possible through local donors and Vermilion businesses committed to preserving the arts. Peter and Dana Corigan were recognized as the evening's center stage sponsors. Tessa Steinemann Drouhard chaired the planning committee and coordinated efforts alongside center board members and Riddle's supporters. Following the performance, VIP guests attended an intimate reception at the center where Vermilion Mayor Jim Forthofer presented Riddle with an official proclamation, declaring Aug. 28 as John Riddle Day in Vermilion. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the center's capital campaign to restore and revitalize the 1883 Vermilion Town Hall into a thriving hub for the arts. Donations toward the campaign are being accepted through the center's website at harbourtownfineartscenter.org.
