Pedestrian struck, killed on Ohio 2

VERMILION TWP. — Erie County detectives need help solving a fatal pedestrian collision on Ohio 2 early Sunday morning. At about 3:15 a.m., deputies were alerted to a possible deceased person on the side of Ohio 2 in Vermilion Township. They arrived to find a 57-year-old woman lying in the outside lane westbound. Her vehicle was parked nearby on the shoulder. It was determined the woman was a resident of Lorain County and first responders were able to quickly notify next-of-kin. Sheriff's office detectives began investigating the case as a hit-skip crash. So far, they have been unable to determine why the woman was outside of her vehicle on or near the road. A person who drove past the scene after the crash exited Ohio 2 at Ohio 60 and drove to a nearby gas station to alert authorities. Deputies checked the caller's car to ensure it was not involved in the fatal collision, Sigsworth said. The woman's car, a full-size SUV appeared to be fully functional and intact, according to Sigsworth. The witness reportedly told deputies that the SUV was completely blacked out when they came across it. That means, no lights were on. The crash scene is about one mile east of the Ohio 60 interchange, near the Erie/Lorain county line. Detectives announced through social media that they were seeking the public's assistance with the case. "We would be interested in speaking with you if you were traveling in that area at about that time, or if you have any information that you believe would be of any assistance with helping us with this investigation," the post states. Ohio 2 was closed between the Ohio 60 and Vermilion Interchange Road exits for about 90 minutes. State troopers assisted with the road closure. As of midday Monday, there was no update to the investigation, Sigsworth said.
