Daughters of the American Revolution • The Norwalk Sally DeForest Daughters of the American Revolution is offering two writing contests. The fifth through eighth-grade students will use the prompt "Lunch With a Signer." If a student could go back in time to have lunch with someone who signed the Declaration of Independence, who would they choose? How do that person's actions and services contribute to the country's independence? The high school students will write about a "Patriot of the American Revolution." Students will select a revolutionary figure, discuss how they influenced the revolution, who they were and their contribution to the nation. This person must be well-known and real. NORWALK • VacationLand Federal Credit Union recently donated $3,500 to Pleasant Elementary in support of the annual Reading Under the Lights event. The reading event features reading, activities, music and the support of local sports teams and high school clubs. It's open to families with students in pre-K through sixth grade. Each student receives a book and a goodie bag. SANDUSKY • Sandusky Schools' senior class recently participated in a senior sunrise event to kick off their last year of high school. Students attending Sandusky High School and Sandusky Digital Learning Academy both attended. • Sandusky Schools' seniors wrote positive messages outside of the high school. EHOVE • Margaretta Schools and EHOVE electrical tech student Memphis Mckenzie won this year's student-made cornhole boards. Each year, students in EHOVE visual and interactive media design boards, EHOVE construction tech students build them, and EHOVE collision and refinishing students wrap vinyl on them. Visitors of EHOVE's booths at the county fairs for Erie and Huron can enter to win the boards. BENTON-CARROLL-SALEM • Benton-Carroll-Salem's intermediate and elementary school students signed an attendance pledge. The district joined the Cleveland Brown's Stay in the Game attendance initiative. In honor of the program and September being attendance awareness month, students pledged to come to school. BELLEVUE • Kindergarten students learned how to draw shapes to create people. EDISON • Two Edison Schools students attended the second annual All-American Patriotic Picnic fundraiser and were presented with scholarships from state Sen. Theresa Gavarone. The students include Torri Keyser and Morgan Moon. • With the help of the Milan Garden Club, Edison Elementary School hosted its annual Sunflower Contest. At the end of the school year, students are given seeds to plant and grow sunflowers over the summer. When students return to school in the fall, those with the top three flower sizes in each grade receive a prize. This year's winners are: — Kindergartens Kayla Davis, Isla Divers and Laney Shantz — First-graders Mason Frankboner, Evie Otto and Bowie Yates — Second-graders Liam Caudill, Jasper Metcalf and Kathryn Klima — Third-graders Emily Carbary, Sadie Burris and Piper Armstrong — Grand champion: Jovie Ison MARGARETTA • Margaretta Schools and Townsend Community Schools invited Brad Hurtig, an amputee and former student-athlete, to address students. After a devastating accident, days after finishing his sophomore year, both of Hurtig's hands were amputated. With determination, he was able to rejoin his high school football team. And, in his senior year, he led his team's defense with 111 tackles and received all-state honors.
