Shipp leads Streaks to first win

SANDUSKY — In football, sometimes the team that limits its mistakes comes out victorious. In a three-hour game that featured seven turnovers, 29 penalties and an ejection, Sandusky won 32-20 over Lorain on Friday at Strobel Field. "You know we got to be disciplined with those, but I am really proud of my guys," Sandusky coach Jamaris Brown said. "I'm thankful as a coach for my guys continuing to trust me after going down the way we did." In a first half that featured the Blue Streaks (1-2) only having one first down, it was the play of sophomore Dante Shipp Jr. that made all the difference. After a first quarter that saw Lorain halfback Toriano Allen score from 1 yard out, it seemed like it was going to be a long night for the Streaks. In came Shipp to help stabilize the game. "I knew I had to make a play for my teammates," Shipp said. "It was all about making certain adjustments and my guys and I did that." At the 10:20 mark of the second quarter, Dale Johnson found Shipp on a beautifully designed pass, which saw them connect for a 42-yard touchdown. The big night continued for the sophomore as he had the first of two picks. After stepping in front of a pass, Shipp scampered down the sidelines for a 64-yard interception return. "I challenged my defense all week," Brown said. "I challenged them to finish and be ready to play four hard quarters." In that first half, the Blue Streaks had negative-11 yards rushing and 42 total yards on 19 plays. On the other sideline, the Titans had 40 plays for 118 yards. After halftime, the Blue Streaks came out swinging. After the game was tied 7-7, Sandusky ran off 25 answered points to take a 32-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the third quarter, Johnson and Raymond Peake had rushing touchdowns from 11 and 17 yards, respectively. The fourth quarter brought the most electric play off the night, which was the hat trick for Shipp as he jumped in front of another Lorain pass, taking it 89 yards for the touchdown. Shipp finished with 268 all-purpose yards, with 153 yards coming from his interceptions. Also in the win, Johnson went 6 for 15 for 56 yards passing and 35 yards rushing on 11 attempts. The Blue Streaks now turn their focus to next week to a road matchup at Padua Franciscan. "We have to continue to limit distractions and keep building week by week," Brown said. "These guys continue to work and we need to correct some things because small details make all the difference in big games."
