Come out to 'Querencia'

SANDUSKY — A domestically located gallery is going foreign for its first show of this season. "Querencia," pronounced "keh-rehn-syah," represents the Sandusky Cultural Center's first show to kick off the 2025-26 season. The display of artwork collectively premieres Sunday with a public reception set for 1-4 p.m. "A Spanish word, querencia means 'a place you can always come back to, the place you are safe, your home,'" according to a center statement. Regarding the upcoming exhibit, "'Querencia' includes blown glass, ceramic sculptures and serigraphy as well as paintings and drawings in a variety of media," the statement read. Here's a look at each participating artist as explained by the statement: • "Janet Ballweg presents five pieces from her ongoing series of shirts rendered in complex silkscreen prints." • "Elizabeth Boch shows small but highly detailed graphite drawings." • "Marsha Gray Carrington exhibits a small group of her stylized paintings of her pets." • "Hector Castellanos-Lara returns to our gallery with reminisces about his native country in a group of mixed media paintings and drawings." • "Donna Coleman interprets querencia as humanity in an ambitiously large painting as well as a group of tiny magnetized friend portraits." • "Rob Colgan, widely known for hisfigural and architectural photography, brings a dozen hand-built ceramic miniature houses and other buildings." • "Jacob Dawkins has drawn a pair of vivid drawings of the tiny hands of his young children." • "Citlali Elena has sent an acrylic self-portrait and a pair of watercolor studies of tropical flora evocative of her homeland." • "Benjamin Johnson returns with a range of technically complex blown glass vessels which often employ labor-intensive, cold finishing techniques." • "Jeff Yost completes 'Querencia' with five new oil landscape paintings on panel which invite serious contemplation." • "The lobby gallery cases present an exhibit of Hispanic art objects from a private collection." Beyond Sunday, the exhibit welcomes people to view artwork through Oct. 12 during the following times and days: • 1-4 p.m. on Sundays • Noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays "Admission is free at all times and parking is available at the rear of Sandusky High School, 2130 Hayes Ave. (Ohio 4), in Sandusky," the statement read.
