Deputy nabs extreme speeder

GROTON TWP. — An Erie County sheriff's deputy arrested a motorcyclist after he allegedly failed to stop while the deputy attempted to pull him over. James J. Kreglow, 31, of the 800 block of County Road 308, Bellevue, is facing one count of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a fourth-degree felony. He is also facing three minor misdemeanors: speeding (97 in a 55), reckless operation and passing on a double yellow line. Just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, a sergeant with the sheriff's office was monitoring traffic in the 9000 block of Strecker Road when he noticed a motorcycle that appeared to be exceeding the posted 55 mph speed limit. When he activated his radar unit, the initial reading showed the bike was going 102 mph, or nearly twice the speed limit. After the bike passed the sergeant's location, he pulled out and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. As both vehicles traveled westbound on Strecker, "it became apparent the motorcycle was not going to slow down or stop," according to an Erie County Sheriff's Office report. The deputy activated his lights and sirens just east of Bragg Road, or more than a mile from where the bike passed the cruiser. The bike then started passing other westbound vehicles over a double yellow line, the report states. Speeds during the pursuit exceeded 115 mph, according to the report. Kreglow finally stopped near the intersection of Ohio 269 and was taken into custody. After the deputy advised Kreglow of his Miranda rights, he asked Kreglow why he failed to stop. Kreglow allegedly replied, "like I said, I've flown past you guys before being stupid and reckless." The bike was towed and Kreglow was transported to Erie County Jail where he was incarcerated under a no-bond order that was authorized by Judge C.J. Kamm, according to the report. As of late Wednesday, he is still held there under a $10,000 bond. He has an arrangement scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday.
