New playground pops up at city park

SANDUSKY — Sturdier, spiffier and safer equipment recently found a new home in a local park. Not too long ago, Sandusky officials unveiled the new playground at Schaeffer Park. It's located at the corner of Hayes Avenue (Ohio 4) and Johnson Street across from Sandusky High School. "We had to remove the old playground equipment earlier this year due to safety issues, but now the park has brand-new equipment ready for kids to enjoy," according to a city statement. "Stop by and check it out." The new playground includes a multi-feature play system with a whirlwind climber, river rock climber, overhead climber, curved zip slide, cliff wall, double swerve zip slide, straight slide, fun seat bongos, erratic climber and a shade umbrella. It also boasts a protective layer under the surfacing to improve durability along with a soft, impact-absorbing playground surface for safety. And there's "an accessibility feature to ensure the playground is inclusive for children of all abilities," said Chris Mehling, the city's recreation project coordinator. Federal funds covered the project's entire expense, roughly $83,200. This included acquiring the equipment and crews installing each piece. "Playgrounds provide a safe, accessible space for children and families to engage in outdoor activity, supporting both physical and social development," Mehling said. "They also enhance neighborhood quality of life, foster a sense of community and contribute to public health and well-being," he added. "Investing in playgrounds aligns with the city's strategic plan to improve parks and recreation, ensuring that all residents have access to high-quality play spaces."
