Fight against Alzheimer's 'matters more than ever'

SANDUSKY — The Alzheimer's Association Northwest Ohio Chapter's Walk to End Alzheimer's annual event takes place Sunday at Jackson Street Pier, 233 W. Shoreline Drive, in Sandusky. Check-in begins at 1 p.m. The ceremony and walk then begin at 2 p.m. The event aims to raise awareness for Alzheimer's and other dementias. "With more than 600 walks taking place across the U.S. each fall, (the) Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest fundraising event and supports the association's free educational programs and support groups, family/caregiver care services and advancements in treatment and research," according to an event statement. Here are some stats to understand as outlined by the association: • In Ohio, 236,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's. • About 16.5% of people aged 45 and older have subjective cognitive decline. • Roughly 452,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Ohio. • Nearly 679 million hours of unpaid care provided by Alzheimer's caregivers, translating to $13.3 billion in value of this unpaid care. "These numbers show that a public health approach is necessary to lessen the burden and enhance the quality of life for those living with cognitive impairment and their families," the association noted. "In the fight against Alzheimer's, now matters more than ever."
