Woman killed in crash

VERMILION TWP. — A woman is dead following a single-vehicle crash in Vermilion Township early Sunday morning. Just after midnight, first responders were called to Darrow Road between Furnace and Risden roads for the report of a traffic crash. They arrived to find a 2003 Dodge Dakota with extensive damage resting just off the road near the westbound lane. Sarah Gehringer, 34, of Wakeman, was operating the truck when it crashed, according to a media release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Gehringer was eastbound on Darrow Road in the Dakota when she exited a curve after Furnace Road with too much speed, the release states. She reportedly lost control, went left of center and then off-road. The truck hit a utility pole and two trees before coming to a rest. It was unclear if the truck rolled, but it came to a rest facing westbound or opposite the way it was originally traveling. Gehringer, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the truck and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. That section of Darrow Road was closed for about three hours while troopers investigated, funeral home workers removed the body and a tow truck removed the truck. The power company also needed to inspect lines, though no homes in the area appeared to have lost power. The road reopened shortly after 3 a.m. Troopers suspect alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, the release states.
