PREP ROUNDUP: Perkins' Smelcer finishes first at Avon Lake

AVON LAKE — Perkins junior Joel Smelcer won the Maroon Division boys cross country race at the Avon Lake Earlybird Invitational on Saturday. Smelcer crossed the finish line in a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds, more than 14 seconds ahead of Avon senior Jose Alvarado. Huron was the top finishing team in the area, taking 10th place with a score of 236. Perkins was 12th with 251 points. Shaker Heights won with 128 points while St. Edward was second with 132. Sage Edgerly-Bork was fifth for the Tigers in 16:41. Jason Nims took 12th in 17:09 while Achilles Figueroa was 35th, finishing 18:03. Jackson Zolman was the second-best finisher for Perkins, taking 42nd in 18:14. In the girls Maroon Division race, Huron's Rylie Towns was third overall in 19:42. Hathaway Brown's Anna Prusak was first, winning in 18:39, almost a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Maya Gonzalez from Bay. The Tigers took fourth overall as a team with 103 points. Hathaway Brown won the team title with 34 points while Bay was second with 73. Andrea Lesnak was 20th for Huron in a time of 21:03 while Claire Putnam was 23rd in 21:15. Lillie Price was the top finisher for Perkins, which didn't field a full team. She was 42nd in a time of 22:15. Sandusky, Norwalk run at Ashland ASHLAND — Norwalk's Saige Konik was seventh overall in a time of 19:13 in the Division I-II race at the Ashland Arrows Invitational. The Truckers finished eighth as a team with 211 points. Wadsworth was the team champion with 48 points while Lexington was second with 64. Olive Leavitt was 14th for Norwalk in 20:02 while Xavia Immel took 32nd in 20:55. Sandusky's lone runner, Esme Smith, was 111th in 24:08. On the boys side, the Truckers were 12th with 357 points. Lexington won the title with 39 points with Massillon Perry taking second with 76. Sandusky finished 18th. Nolan Jones led Norwalk with a 56th-place finish in 18:04. Vincent Rose was the top finisher for the Blue Streaks, taking 139th in 19:57. Margaretta girls 3rd at Bucyrus BUCYRUS — Behind a seventh-place finish from Tenlee Hemmer, the Polar Bears' girls team was third at the Bucyrus Elks Invitational. Hammer crossed the line in 21:09 as Margaretta tallied 75 points. Upper Sandusky was the team champion with 21 points. Elyria was second with 56. Amyra Ruffing was 14th overall in 22:10 for the Polar Bears with Lucy Hartman taking 30th in 24:18. For the boys, Margaretta was sixth as team with 157 points. Elyria won the title with 48 points while Upper Sandusky was second with 57. The leading finisher for the Polar Bears was AJ Walters, who was 16th in a time of 18:29. Kyle Walton finished in 21st in 18:35. VOLLEYBALL Huron 3, Notre Dame 2 TOLEDO — The Tigers went the distance with Toledo Notre Dame Academy and topped the Eagles 25-13, 15-25, 25-18, 17-25, 15-13, in non-league play. Mya Smith led Huron (4-1) with 17 kills while Jada Foster added 15 kills. Reece Hotz was 89 for 89 setting with 36 assists and 19 for 20 serving with 10 points. Jenna Cox also served 10 points, Taylor Wlodarsky served nine and Paige Johnson added five kills. Vermilion 3, Bowsher 0 VERMILION — The Sailors picked up a 25-12, 25-19, 25-11 non-league win over Bowsher. Emma Gebhardt led Vermilion (2-4) with 10 kills while Elizabeth Okasinski had nine kills and five digs. Delaney Russell picked up 17 digs, Sophie Habermehl (seven aces) served for 17 points and added eight digs. Lauren Logsdon tallied 18 assists and Elyse Myntti had 15 points serving and 15 assists. SJCC 3, Margaretta 0 CASTALIA — The Crimson Streaks improved to 6-0 overall with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-10 non-league win. The Polar Bears fell to 2-5. No Margaretta stats were reported. Norwalk goes 1-1 NORWALK — The Truckers split two matches at its host invitational. Elyria Catholic defeated Norwalk 25-12, 25-13, in its first match of the day and the Truckers defeated Danbury 25-10, 25-16. Sawyer Wineman had five kills, four aces and 13 digs against Danbury. BOYS SOCCER Clear Fork 2, Norwalk 0 NORWALK — The Truckers trailed 1-0 at halftime in the non-league loss. Norwalk fell to 2-3 overall. GIRLS SOCCER Elyria Catholic 3, Bellevue 0 BELLEVUE — The Lady Red fell to 1-4 overall with the non-league loss. BOYS GOLF Perkins 5th at Bellevue Invite SANDUSKY — Colton Kelley shot an 80, leading the Pirates to a fifth-place finish at the Bellevue Invitational at Wousickett Golf Course. Perkins finished with a team total of 327. Liberty-Benton won the event with a 311. Bellevue (334) was eighth, Clyde (367) was 14th and St. Paul (426) was 21st. Ty Obergefell and Kyle Schaefer each added an 82 for the Pirates. Sam Cooper carded an 81 for Bellevue while Jackson Decker and Caden Lindsey each finished with an 84. Nico Carroll paced the Fliers with an 84. Mason Beatty shot an 81 for St. Paul.
