Fall Line overall winner in Sandusky Islands Race

SANDUSKY — Fall Line was the overall winner at the Sandusky Islands Race on Saturday. The sailboat owned by Charles Schaffner from the Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland won the PHRF B division and won the overall title with a corrected time of 2:57.40. Illuminati, the PHRF A winner, finished second overall with a corrected time of 3:00.13. Sanford Burris is the owner of the Andrews 68. First Lady was third (3:00.54) and InfraRed, owned by Bryan Huntley, was fourth (3:03.46) after winning the PHRF C division. "It was a beautiful day for sailing," said Jason Huffman, race director and past commodore for the Sandusky Sailing Club. "The wind was out of the southwest at 7-to-15 knots. Good wind — not the drifters we've had the last couple years." A total of 37 boats participated in the 70th annual race sponsored by the Sandusky Sailing Club. The PHRF and Singlehanded classes covered a course that totaled 21.17 miles from Cedar Point to Kelleys Island and back. Boats raced in six different divisions, but a handicapping system allowed boats in the three PHRF categories to compete against each other. "That allows us to have boats that aren't the same race against each other," Huffman said. Jacob Thomas from Milan, piloting Smoke Show, won the Singlehanded division. His home club is the SSC. Valkyrie won the Cruising division while Cracker Jam was the JAM winner. Those boats raced 17.99 miles.
