Event raises awareness, breaks stigma of suicide

PERKINS TWP. — The Erie County Suicide Prevention Coalition invites the community to the Steps of Hope Walk. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 outside of the Erie County Services Center, 2900 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, beside the Erie County Fairgrounds. People can meet in the government offices' parking lot. The walk does start at 10:40 a.m. No prior registration is necessary. It's an "event dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigma and offering support to those affected by suicide," according to a coalition statement. All who participate are encouraged to wear green or purple to show their support. "This uplifting event will bring together individuals, families and organizations to honor lives lost, celebrate survivors and strengthen our community's commitment to prevention and hope," the statement read. The walk will feature food, games, raffles, mental health screenings, community resource tables and opportunities to connect with local mental health advocates. "By participating, you are helping to spread the message that hope is always possible and that no one in our community should face mental health struggles alone," the statement read. "All proceeds and donations will go toward suicide prevention initiatives and support services right here in Erie County."
