PORT CLINTON — Down, but not out. The Port Clinton second doubles team of Shantha Weit and Megan Zgodzinski trailed big in their semifinal match Saturday against Olivia Stumbo and Loraina Guardia of Ottawa Hills. Weit and Zgodzinski rallied for a 10-8 win, then topped Norwalk's Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding 10-1 in the finals. The duo opened the day with a 10-2 win over Lima Shawnee. "I'll be the first to admit that Shantha and Megan looked pretty out of it and upset, and I had kind of moved on to watch other matches," PC coach Joe Miller said. "That was a mistake. Those two rattled off seven games in a row to take the match and get a huge victory for themselves and our team. Without that win, we might not be ahead of Ottawa Hills in the final standings." The wins helped propel Port Clinton to the team championship with 95 points to Ottawa Hills' 80 points. Norwalk (53 points) was fourth, Clyde (36) was fifth, St. Mary Central Catholic (26) was sixth and Bellevue (10) was seventh. "We're obviously thrilled to win our host tournament," Miller said. "It's been a long time since we've won it because it's such a loaded field. Teams like Ottawa Hills and Lima Shawnee consistently send girls to state." Anastasia Hughes and Jayda Mullens were champions at fourth doubles. They topped Bellevue (10-0) in the quarterfinals, Leksi Jurczuk and Roxy Brummit from Norwalk (10-2) in the semis and defeated Evelyn Parsons and Leah Thomas from Ottawa Hills (10-6) in the finals. Lilly Hyatt and Jae Mazur were runner-up at third doubles. They defeated Norwalk (10-8) and Ottawa Hills (10-2) before losing to Riya Naroon and Leah Fuller from Lima Shawnee in the final, 10-6. Grace Arnold and Nora Pixler were third at first doubles. After defeating Fostoria (10-0), they lost to Ottawa Hills (10-8) before an 8-6 win over Lydia Trost and Addy Rospert from Norwalk. Clyde's Kenzie Guhn and Ariah Farrar were runners-up at first doubles, losing to Bryn Tangeman and Shivani Pindiprolu from Ottawa Hills in the final. Pirates top host Invite PERKINS TWP. — The Pirates won two of the four doubles brackets, winning its home doubles Invitational. Perkins took the team championship with 86 points while Mansfield Madison (71 points) was runner-up. Huron (51) was fourth, Vermilion (22) was sixth, Edison (20) was seventh and Sandusky (18) was eighth. Brynn Catlett and Lexi Green won the second doubles title for the Pirates. They defeated Huron's Brynne Hartley and Ally Murray in the final, 5-3, 5-0. Earlier, they took down Madison, 5-2, 5-4 (1), and Lexington, 5-3, 3-5, 11-4. At fourth doubles, Perkins had both the champion and runner-up as Emma Beatty and Katelynn Troyer topped teammates Paige Loris and Alex Ott, 5-2, 5-3, in the final. Loris and Ott defeated Sandusky's Chloe Goodsite and Kylie Gant in the semifinals, 5-0, 5-0. At third doubles, Jencyn Gennari and Ella West were defeated by Lexington's Maggie Wallace and Jade Hunt in the finals, 5-3, 5-0. Huron's Rachel Merckens and Emma Barnes took third at first doubles. They defeated Sandusky's Amya Johnson and Kam Ehrnsberger, 5-1, 5-0 before a 5-2, 5-3 loss to Lexington. They then defeated Edison's Liz Campbell and Jenna Keoghan in the third-place match, 8-7 (3). VOLLEYBALL Perkins 3, Central Catholic 0 PERKINS TWP. — The Pirates topped Toledo Central Catholic 25-21, 25-17, 25-14. Ferrell Coleman led Perkins (2-2) with 13 kills while Braelyn Davie (three aces) tallied 26 assists and 11 digs. Viera Walker added 13 digs and six kills and Micah Slay recorded seven kills and five digs. Genoa 3, Port Clinton 1 GENOA — Genoa topped the Redskins 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-13. Marissa Frohne led Port Clinton (1-3) with eight kills, six blocks and three aces. Evalee Cross and Lila Bishop each dished 11 assists for the Redskins. Monroeville 1-1 in tri-match MONROEVILLE — Monroeville defeated Edison 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 before Mohawk topped the Eagles 16-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-22, 15-6, in non-league action. Mohawk also slipped past Edison, 25-12, 25-13, 25-13. For Monroeville (2-2) against Edison, Madi Reiber had 16 kills, Ady Adams lined nine kills and Alexa Adams tallied 12 digs, six kills and five aces. Addison Homan recorded 28 digs, Addison Lyons contributed 17 assists and eight digs and Kaci Poths had 15 assists and nine digs. Madi Miller also had nine digs for the Eagles. In the loss to Mohawk, Ady Adams smacked 13 kills, Reiber had 11 kills and eight digs and Alexa Adams registered 13 digs and eight kills. Homan picked up 33 digs, Miller had 16 digs and three aces, Lyons tallied 19 assists and nine digs and Gabby Loose had six kills. Macari Harris led Edison (1-3) on the day with 11 kills while Dana Preston added 10 kills and six digs. Taylor Moore paced the defense with 31 digs, Peyton Bissell had 19 assists, Paige McFadden added 12 assists, Ella Booth contributed 10 digs and six kills and Stella Brown picked up nine digs. NDCL 3, Huron 0 CHARDON — The Lions topped Huron in non-league action, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21. Reece Hotz tallied 23 assists for the Tigers (1-1). Addison Graham had seven kills, Mya Smith and Jada Foster each lined six kills, and Ava Trevino registered four blocks. Adelyn Van Sickle paced the defense with 18 digs. Rocky River 3, Vermilion 0 VERMILION — Rocky River defeated the Sailors 25-16, 25-20, 25-21. Faith Sergent and Sophie Habermehl each had seven kills for Vermilion (0-3). Lauren Logsdon recorded 16 assists and nine digs while Elyse Myntti had nine assists. Defensively, Delaney Russell had 11 digs and Haley Stepp recorded 10 digs. BOYS SOCCER Madison 4, Norwalk 0 MANSFIELD — The Truckers trailed 2-0 at halftime in the non-league loss. Abe Linder recorded 10 saves for Norwalk (0-2). Vermilion 3, Elyria Catholic 1 VERMILION — Brady Parker scored twice to lift the Sailors to the non-league win. Noah Penton added a goal and assist for Vermilion (2-1). Julien Lind also had an assist. GIRLS SOCCER Vermilion 4, Independence 2 VERMILION — The Sailors picked up their first win of the season with the non-league victory. Morgan Frenk led Vermilion (1-1) with a goal and two assists. Also scoring for the Sailors was Abby Gawry, Jordyn Stehr and Maggie Falknor. Madison 2, Norwalk 1 MANSFIELD — Claire Spettle scored the Truckers' lone goal on a breakaway in the non-league loss. Becca Farmer had nine saves in goal for Norwalk (2-1). CROSS COUNTRY Weichman wins at Seneca East ATTICA — Port Clinton's Morgan Wiechman missed the course record by just .08 seconds, winning the race in 18:51 at the Seneca East Invitational. Kendyll Hartlaub was 35th in 25:48 for the Redskins while Micaela Wiechman was 59th in 30:59. Charlie Simpson ran a career-best 16:58, taking sixth place for Port Clinton. Gabe Garza was 67th (21:53) and Abram Sandvick was 93rd (23:40). Towns 2nd at Eastwood PEMBERVILLE — Huron junior Rylie Towns finished second overall at the Darin Goodman Night Meet on the campus of Eastwood High School. Towns finished in 19:13, helping the Tigers take second as a team with 79 points. Toledo St. Ursula won with 51 points. Claire Putnam was eighth in a time of 20:08. Sasha Fry (21:04) was 23rd, Andrea Lesnak (21:11) was 24th and Laney Schlessman (21:20) was 27th for Huron. Margaretta finished 14th as a team. Tenlee Hemmer had the time for the Polar Bears, finishing 66th in 22:34. Anthony Wayne won the boys team title with 63 points with Huron taking 4th with 168 points. Leading the way for the Tigers was the fourth-place finish of Sage Edgerly-Bork, who crossed the line in 16:12. Jason Nims (16:58) was 12th, Achilles Figueroa (17:45) took 25th and Sam Case (19:05) was 54th. Margaretta was 13th with 338 points. Cole Zang was fifth overall in a time of 16:14. A.J. Walters added a 17th-place finish in 17:32.
