ROUNDUP: Perkins loses to Clear Fork on walkoff field goal

BELLVILLE — Clear Fork stunned Perkins 17-14 when Nash Evans made a 29-yard field goal as time expired Friday. The Pirates (0-1) were driving near midfield with under 30 seconds to play, but were forced to punt. The snap went over punter Grant Hickman's head and Clear Fork recovered on the Perkins 12-yard line, setting up the game-winning kick. Perkins tied the game at 14-14 when Sam Schweinfurth found Blake Parker for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 9:05 to play in the game. The Colts never trailed as they avenged a 55-0 loss to Perkins in the 2024 season opener. Clear Fork outgained Perkins 279-195 and limited the Pirates to negative-20 rushing. Schweinfurth completed 13 of 29 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Parker caught six passes for 98 yards and Logan Wadsworth caught three for 103 yards. Perkins hosts Toledo Scott on Friday in its home opener. Cy Christensen threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Cael Charles in the first minute of the game to get Steele on the board. Christensen hooked up with Charles on a 5-yard TD pass later in the first quarter. Christensen also ran for two touchdowns. No Sandusky stats were reported. The Blue Streaks host Fremont Ross on Friday in its home opener. SMCC 43, Cardinal Stritch 0 OREGON — Bryan Gibson took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and St. Mary Central Catholic rolled to a 43-0 win at Cardinal Stritch in 8-man action. Gibson added touchdown runs covering 8, 11 and 2 yards to help the Panthers build a 29-0 halftime lead. Gibson added a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to finish the game with five scores. SMCC hosts Sebring McKinley at 5 p.m. Saturday at Strobel Field. Vermilion 21, Margaretta 20 VERMILION — In a game defined by the run, a crucial pass made all the difference in Vermilion's 21-20 win over visiting Margaretta. Facing a third down in their own territory, the Sailors (1-0) threw a seam route from Drake Hooks to Brock Meyers, who broke a couple tackles and outsprinted Polar Bear defenders en route to a game-winning 63-yard catch and run with three minutes to play. Margaretta (0-1) opened the scoring when Zack Bouy exploded for an 88-yard touchdown run. Judah Keller added the extra point and the Polar Bears led 7-0. Vermilion responded as Zack Werth scored on a 37-yard run with Micah Smith's extra point tying the game at 7. The Polar Bears went up 14-7 after one quarter on a Jake Bouy 58-yard run and Keller extra point. Vermilion travels to Firelands (0-1) on Friday while Margaretta hosts Western Reserve (1-0) in its home opener.
