Sandusky man found not competent to stand trial

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man who allegedly failed to provide proper care for his wife, which led to her death, was recently found not competent to stand trial by a doctor. Ronald Rogers II, 69, of the 600 block of 46th St., previously entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity at a pre-trial hearing on April 22. As a result of that plea, Rogers was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial, according to court records. On Aug. 8, the court reviewed a report that was written by Dr. Greg Hupp, a psychologist, who found that Rogers was "not competent to stand trial at this time." The court, however, believes that Rogers "has substantial probability" that his competency can be restored within one year. Court records did not specify the factors used to determine Rogers' competency or where the evaluation occurred. As of late Wednesday, no future court hearings appear to be scheduled for Rogers. Court records appear to indicate Rogers is being committed at Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare in Toledo. Background The investigation began on June 6, 2024 after Sandusky police responded to Ronald Rogers' residence for a report of a deceased woman, according to a Sandusky police report. Once officers arrived at the residence, officers were "immediately able to smell a pungent odor" coming from inside the house, the report states. They found the house covered in trash, maggots and flies and found the body of a woman, the report states. Ronald Rogers identified the woman as his wife, Jennifer A. Rogers, whose obituary states she was 52 years old when she died. Ronald identified himself as her caregiver when speaking to police. When officers went to check on Jennifer Rogers, she was "cold to the touch" and appeared to have an open wound on her left leg that was down to the bone, and she was described as "extremely malnourished as her stomach was sunk in and her ribcage was visible," the report states. Rogers allegedly stated that his wife suffered from multiple sclerosis and severe kidney stones, the report states. Sandusky police later learned that investigations had been conducted prior to this incident after medical professionals allegedly contacted them regarding Jennifer Rogers not receiving proper care, the report states.
