Training for water rescues

BAY VIEW — Last week, Bay View's volunteer fire department "conducted valuable water rescue training right here on Sandusky Bay," according to a village statement. "While we may be a small department, our village is completely surrounded by water, making this type of training absolutely critical," it read. Through the statement, here's a recap of what first responders accomplished: • "Using our department's small boat and another retired fireboat generously donated for the evening by one of our members, crews practiced real-world rescue techniques under the leadership of Chief Gedridge and Lt. Draper." • "Our members practiced rescuing people from both boats and directly from the water near docks, ensuring we're ready for the unique challenges our community faces." • "Every second counts in an emergency on the water." • "Whether it's helping a boater in distress, aiding someone who's fallen in or responding during severe weather, having the skills, teamwork and confidence to act quickly can make all the difference."
