Man pulled from water dies

SANDUSKY — A man pulled from a local canal last week has died. Dallas C. McKinley, 58, of Sandusky, died at a Cleveland hospital on Thursday, according to Sandusky fire Chief Mario D'Amico. He was operating a kayak in a canal behind the 400 block of Crosstree Lane on Aug. 13, clearing vegetation while employed as a landscaper. At one point, his partner was not able to see him and searched for some time before alerting authorities that McKinley was missing. Sandusky first responders arrived in the area and began searching the area of the canal. One firefighter used a long pole to probe the canal in an attempt to locate McKinley. The fire department's dive team then arrived. Three firefighters suited up to enter the canal to further the search. Before the third man was able to enter the water, McKinley was found and pulled from the water. First responders began CPR on the dock. They were eventually able to get a pulse. While McKinley remained unconscious, he was taken first to a local hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to a Cleveland hospital. He died in Cleveland the next day. About McKinley McKinley was born on Dec. 23, 1966, to the late William Lee and Etta Mae McKinley, according to his obituary. He graduated from Sandusky High School with the class of 1986. McKinley is remembered as a jack of all trades who previously worked for J.H. Routh Packing, AV Lake Construction and as a private contractor. He instilled in his children the mantra that "if a man don't work, a man don't eat," the obituary states. A funeral has not been announced, though Toft Funeral Home officials are assisting the family.
