PREP ROUNDUP: Norwalk rallies past Edison

NORWALK — After a junior varsity match went extra long, the two varsity programs for visiting Edison and host Norwalk followed suit in Tuesday's early-season matchup at Norwalk High School. In a non-league match filled with long rallies, it was host Norwalk outlasting the Chargers, 27-25, 23-25, 25-27, 25-21, 15-9. In the decisive fifth set, Edison (0-1) grabbed the early 5-3 lead. However, a pair of kills by Sydney Moehlman erased that deficit. Norwalk (1-1) was then unable to handle Stella Brown's lob, and Macari Harris then followed by dropping a ball over by the slimmest of margins of the Norwalk side to extend the Edison lead to 7-5. Sophomore Ainslee King had a pair of kills around one from Harris for an 8-8 tie, then her classmate, Maddie Gamble, took over the final set. After Gamble gave her team a 9-8 lead, King followed with a big swing near the front of the net to find the floor for a 10-8 lead. Gamble did the same in dominating fashion, and an ace from freshman Lola Schlotterer had the Chargers reeling and down 12-8. Gamble and Harris then traded kills, then it was Gamble again finding the ball just inside the back line for a 14-9 lead. Bella Hernandez then finished off the match for the Truckers with the kill and the 15-9 win. Harris had 15 kills and five blocks for Edison while Taylor Moore registered 25 digs. Peyton Bissell totaled 20 assists, Paige McFadden added 17 assists, Brown tallied 15 digs and Ella Booth had eight digs and six kills. Gamble had 22 kills and 15 digs for Norwalk. King had 19 kills and four blocks, Emily Tyler had 52 assists and 11 digs, and Reagan Mooney tallied 23 digs for the Truckers. Sawyer Wineman led the Norwalk defense with 33 digs. Moehlman had 10 kills while Schlotterer registered 11 digs. Mohawk 3, Clyde 2 CLYDE — Mohawk slipped past the Fliers 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 18-25, 15-13, in non-league action. Brooklyn Hemminger and Amiyah Paul each lined 10 kills for Clyde (2-1). Kelsey Ray tallied 30 assists, Lucy Glass added 21 digs and Annmarie Davis had five kills. "Clyde showed up the first set strong, but failed to maintain momentum needed to finish the next two sets," Clyde coach Shelley Rogers said. "Overall, I am pleased with the way they are progressing as a team. They are a determined group of girls and I just know they will continue to fight each game." Port Clinton 3, Sandusky 2 PORT CLINTON — Port Clinton edged Sandusky in five sets. The Redskins won rallied for a 24-26, 21-25, 26-24, 25-16, 15-11 win in the SBC crossover match. No game stats were reported by press time. Gibsonburg 3, Danbury 0 DANBURY TWP. — Gibsonburg swept Danbury 25-22, 25-16, 25-18, in SBC River Division action. Grace McDonald had eight kills for Danbury and Cali Wunder had 17 assists. GIRLS SOCCER Edison 14, Northwood 0 NORTHWOOD — Joy Jordan scored three goals in the first half and four in the match as shut out Northwood 14-0 to get its first win of the season. Kailyn Dickman added two goals and two assists in the first half as the Chargers (1-2) built a 9-0 lead. Ilah Reynolds scored two goals in the second half for Edison and Becca Houser earned the shutout in goal. Kellyn Ritchie, Sophie Baker, Gia Heater, Ellie Heater, Mary Moon and Peyton Koch all scored one goal for Edison The Chargers host Woodmore at 7 p.m. Monday. GIRLS GOLF Edison's Seville wins medalist honors PORT CLINTON — Edison had four of the top nine scores to dominate a Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division shootout at the Catawba Island Club. The Chargers won the nine-hole event with a 196. Margaretta was second at 216. Annabelle Seville shot a 40 to lead Edison and win medalist honors. Also scoring for the Chargers was Averi Wolf (51), Leah Sharp (52) and Ella Rogers (53). Margaretta's Ellyse Schaefer was second overall with a 44. Ellaynah Schaefer added a 51 for the Polar Bears. Willard finished third (236) and host Port Clinton tied Huron for fourth at 249. Vermilion shot a 252. Huron's Ashtyn Spooner was third among individuals with a 45. Mackenzie Collins led PC with a 52. BOYS GOLF Willard wins close shootout HURON — Willard shot a 163 to edge Vermilion (165) and Margaretta (167) in a SBC Bay shootout at Thunderbird Hills North. Willard's Adler Ames was medalist with a 37. Edison's Hayden Lewis (39) was the only other golfer to break 40. Edison finished fourth at 178. Huron shot a 180 and Port Clinton came in at 206. Margaretta's Phinneas Headley shot a 40. Jaxson Bohn (41) and Keiygan Morris (42) also had strong rounds for the Polar Bears. Noah Penton and Adam Gerber each shot 40 for Vermilion. Lexington 166, Norwalk 173 NORWALK — The Truckers were edged in a non-league match at Eagle Creek. Cohen Shoot paced Norwalk with a 40. Jett Scheid shot a 43, while Emytt Graffice and Caleb Thompson each shot 45s. Also for Norwalk, Luke Metcalf added a 50 and Avery Reitzel had a 57.
