PREP ROUNDUP: Mayes' 2 goals lead Bellevue to debut win

FREMONT — Bellevue's girls soccer team won the first official varsity match in program history Monday, turning back Fremont Ross 2-1. The Lady Red formerly played as a club sport — until Monday. Senior Jersey Mayes scored two goals in the match."I know we are a new team and everything," Mayes said. "We have worked very hard to get to where we are and we have a chance this season." For coach Josh Young, it was a long time coming, and to see the team come alive was very satisfying. "I couldn't be more proud of them," Young said. "Yes, we have the five seniors, and they did a really great job of being leaders. For most of these girls, this is their first game. While we might be older, we are definitely young in experience." Bellevue got on the board in the first half with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Lady Red kept the ball most of the time in Fremont's territory for the first half. Mayes got aggressive among a sea of purple and gray to take a shot up the middle into the goal. "This game, I knew I wanted to be confident and take my shots when they were there," she said. That's exactly what I did. They fell, and that is what I was hoping for. The first one was tricky and I had to be aggressive." About half way through the second half, the Lady Red struck again. This time, the play was set up by Lily Sosa, who passed to senior captain and forward Reece Young. Young then got it to Mayes, who kicked it over the goalie's head into the goal. Bellevue goalie Ryleigh Knutti had 10 saves. "Just like Jersey, I was trying to be aggressive," Knutti said. "When there's a ball coming deep toward me, I'm not just letting them come to me. I'm not just letting players come to me. I'm just running, diving in and hoping for the best that I grab the ball before it becomes a goal." Oak Harbor 4, Port Clinton 0 PORT CLINTON — OH's girls shut out PC 4-0. Claire Blausey and Skyler Schultz each had two goals for the Rockets. Abbi Johnson had seven saves in goal for the Redskins (0-1). Norwalk 3, Upper Sandusky 2 UPPER SANDUSKY — The Truckers opened the season with a non-league win. Claire Spettle scored twice and CJ Bennett added the third goal for Norwalk (1-0). Bennett also assisted one of Spettle's goals, while Audrey Sanders added the other two assists. At goalkeeper, Becca Farmer made three saves. Norwalk will entertain Shelby at 7 p.m. Wednesday. BOYS SOCCER Oak Harbor 1, Port Clinton 0 PORT CLINTON — Xavier Flower scored the only goal to lift Oak Harbor's boys to a 1-0 non-conference win. Caden Hanson had seven saves for Port Clinton (0-1). Vermilion 5, Willard 1 VERMILION — Brady Parker scored four goals to give the Sailors a Sandusky Bay Conference Bay win. Noah Penton added a goal and two assists for Vermilion (1-1, 1-0 SBC). Caleb Drost and Owen Larkins each added an assist for the Sailors. VOLLEYBALL SMCC 3, Plymouth 2 SANDUSKY — St. Mary Central Catholic defeated Plymouth 25-21, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12. Reid Didion led the Panthers (1-1) will 18 kills. Finley Karr had 21 assists, Ella Brownell finished with 17 digs and Madi Perkins added five blocks and six kills. BOYS GOLF SMCC takes 2nd at River shootout FREMONT — St. Mary Central Catholic finished second at a Sandusky Bay Conference River Division shootout at Sycamore Hills. The Panthers shot a 173 to finish five strokes behind Tiffin Calvert. SMCC's Blake Finneran won medalist honors with a one-over par 36. Joey Finneran shot a 44 for the Panthers. Danbury finished fourth at 176. Frankie Kovach and Danny Carroll each shot a 41 for the Lakers. GIRLS GOLF Norwalk 205, Margaretta 234 NORWALK — Adyson Lepley fired a 45 to lead the Truckers to a non-league win at Eagle Creek. Evelyn Welschenbach added a 46 for Norwalk.
