PREP ROUNDUP: Clyde opens with 2 volleyball wins

CASTALIA — Clyde opened its volleyball season with a pair of wins at a tri-match Saturday at Margaretta. The Fliers rallied to beat the host Polar Bears 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 and swept New Riegel 25-23, 25-20. Kelsey Ray had a strong all-around match against Margaretta with nine kills, 15 assists and 11 digs. For Margaretta, Kenadie Saylor had 12 kills, 15 digs and was 11-12 serving for Margaretta. Lilly Belak added 14 digs and five kills. Brooklyn Hemminger had eight kills and 11 digs. Lucy Glass finished with 18 digs and Reese Daniel had eight kills. Annmarie Davis had eight kills against NR and Hemminger added seven. Margaretta bounced back to defeat New Riegel, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19. Saylor had 13 kills and 14 digs. Belak had 13 digs and six kills. Ella Liberios had 16 digs and Tarah Hershey added 17 assists. Danbury 3, Cardinal Stritch 0 OREGON — Danbury opened its season with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of Cardinal Stritch. Aaliyah Ohm led the Lakers with 12 kills and Grace McDonald added nine. Lauren Bergman was credited with 34 digs and Cali Wunder added 23 assists. Lexington 3, Perkins 0 LEXINGTON — Perkins dropped its opener at Lexington, 25-13, 25-23, 25-22. Ferrell Coleman had 12 kills for the Pirates (0-1). Braelyn Davie had 28 assists and Avery Maldonado added 15 digs and three aces. Bellevue goes 1-1 BELLEVUE — Bellevue split a pair of volleyball matches to open its season 1-1. The Lady Red defeated Port Clinton 25-3, 25-13 and lost to Oak Harbor 25-18, 25-21. Finley LaPata had seven kills against PC and Ellie Frietag added 14 assists. Emma Krall had eight serving aces. Against OH, Kaitlyn Turinsky had five kills. Shelby 3, Vermilion 1 VERMILION — Shelby turned back Vermilion 25-13, 25-18, 27-29, 25-12. Sophie Habermehl led the Sailors (0-1) with 11 kills while adding 13 digs. Elizabeth Okasinski added 10. Lauren Logsdon had 16 assists and Delaney Russell finished with 18 digs. South Central 3, SMCC 0 SANDUSKY — South Central swept St. Mary Central Catholic 25-15, 25-15, 25-13. Reid Didion led the Panthers (0-1) with 10 kills. Finley Karr added 17 assists and 13 digs and Ella Brownell also had 13 digs. BOYS SOCCER Edison 14, Crestview 0 OLIVESBURG — Alex Davidson pumped in a school-record eight goals — all in the first half — to lead Edison to a 14-0 non-league boys soccer win over Ashland Crestview. No game stats were reported. GIRLS SOCCER Crestview 1, Edison 0 OLIVESBURG — The Chargers fell on a single goal to the host Cougars after a free kick with six minutes remaining in the non-league season opener. Ella Rogers made five saves for Edison (0-1), which hosts Eastwood on Monday. TENNIS Norwalk 4th at Doubles Invite NORWALK — The Truckers placed fourth at its host Doubles Invitational. Sylvania Northview won the team title, followed by Ashland in second and Amherst in third. The Truckers placed in all four brackets, led by the third doubles team of Leksi Jurczuk and Chloe Hazelwood in second place. The pair opened with a win over Shelby (6-4, 6-1) before outlasting Amherst in a three-set match that took more than 2 1/2 hours in the excessive heat. Those scores were 6-4, 6-7 (4) and 10-5. In the finals, the pair were swept by Ashland (6-0, 6-0). At second doubles, Alyssa Gruhlke and Aubrey Kluding bounced back from a first-round loss vs. Ashland, 6-0, 7-6 (2) to win twice and place fifth. They beat Edison (8-2) and Findlay (8-3). The fourth doubles team of Roxy Brummit and Riley Helton also lost a long match in the heat to Findlay (2-6, 6-3, 10-8) before also rebounding with a pair of wins to earn fifth. They beat Shelby (8-0) and Ashland (8-6). The first doubles team of Lydia Trost and Addy Rospert also had a long opening match against St. Mary Central Catholic in a three-set loss (3-6, 6-2, 11-9). They then fell to Ashland, 8-3.
