Invasive species spreads

SANDUSKY — A bug with spots and a big appetite is making a mess of local plants. Erie County is currently facing a growing threat from the invasive spotted lanternfly, according to Erie MetroParks, noting it's a destructive pest that poses serious risks to agriculture and the environment. "Several counties in Ohio, including Erie County, are currently under an Ohio quarantine," the park district's statement reads." Under quarantine, products — such as trees and nursery stock — may not be moved out of the area without a compliance agreement, permit or inspection certificate." Local officials are urging residents to take action to help stop the spread. What are spotted lanternflies? Spotted lanternflies are invasive insects that feed on the sap of a wide range of plants, including grapevines, fruit trees, hardwoods and ornamental plants. Both nymphs and adults feed in large numbers, causing wilting, dieback and mold damage. Their feeding weakens plants and leaves behind a sticky residue that promotes the growth of sooty mold, further harming vegetation. How to help While the Ohio Department of Agriculture is not currently removing spotted lanternflies from private property, residents can help by killing them and reporting sightings. Early detection and community involvement are key to controlling the spread.
