OVI checkpoint nets arrest

PORT CLINTON — A roadside checkpoint supported ongoing efforts to improve public safety in Ottawa County. In a continued effort to combat impaired driving and enhance roadway safety, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, in collaboration with Port Clinton police, conducted an operating a vehicle while impaired, or OVI, checkpoint on Thursday. The checkpoint took place on East Perry Street near Buckeye Boulevard and was funded through federal grant support. Statistical analysis over the past three years revealed 20 OVI-related crashes and 51 OVI arrests within a 3-mile radius of the checkpoint location, according to a news release. During the two-hour checkpoint operation, 790 vehicles passed through. Motorists experienced brief delays of about 20 seconds while officers engaged in safety checks. Four drivers were diverted for further investigation, resulting in one arrest for OVI. In addition, saturation patrols conducted in conjunction with the checkpoint led to a felony drug investigation, aided by the Port Clinton police's K-9 officer, according to a news release. "I would like to personally thank those motorists who designated a sober driver or made other travel arrangements after consuming alcohol," said Lt. Shaun Robinson, commander of the Sandusky post. "We hope this trend continues so that no more lives are lost through the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired."
