Kayak paddles, train rides fill August schedule

HURON TWP. — Even though the month is just about halfway over, there are still plenty of fun activities on Erie MetroParks' activities calendar. Here's a look at some notable events happening. People can learn more and register by visiting eriemetroparks.activityreg.com/selectactivity. Statements are provided by the district: • Osborn MetroPark parkrun — 8:45-10:30 a.m. Saturday and on Aug. 23 at Osborn MetroPark, 3910 Perkins Ave., Huron; People need to register by visiting parkrun.us. The race starts at 9 a.m., and people can meet near the park's community gardens area. • Women Who Roam — 9-10 a.m. Saturday at Hoffman Forest MetroPark, 5159 Huff Road, Berlin Heights; The event is open to adults. Walkups are welcome, and registration is not required. Join us for Women Who Roam, a welcoming space for women of all ages to explore the outdoors together. Our hikes offer a safe and supportive environment, perfect for meaningful conversations, as we journey through nature. • Nature scavenger hunt — 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Osborn MetroPark, 3109 Hull Road, Huron; Walkups are welcome. Meet in the parking lot near the children's forest entrance by the dog park. Explore the children's forest and see if you can find nature-themed items listed on the cards. A prize will be given for your efforts. After the scavenger hunt, kids can enjoy the outdoor play areas. • Evening Kayak Paddle — 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and on Aug. 22 at The Coupling MetroPark, 11618 Ohio 13, Milan; It's intended for those 13 and up. Tandem kayaks avaialble upon request by calling 419-625-7783, ext. 221. Join Erie MetroParks for a relaxing evening paddle on the scenic Huron River. This guided kayak program offers a chance to explore calm waters while enjoying breathtaking sunset views and the sights and sounds of local wildlife. Perfect for paddlers of all skill levels. • Composing workshop — 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the Roger Johnson Nature Center, Room 110, 3910 E. Perkins Ave., Huron; This event is open to all ages. Don't miss the opportunity to delve into the world of composting. Learn how to start your compost journey and how to keep it going. • Just About Horses and Donkeys — 6-7 p.m. Aug. 21 at The Barnyard, 3819 E. Perkins Ave., Huron. This event is open to children and adults, and attendees need to wear closed-toed shoes. Increase your horse/donkey knowledge and get hands-on experience with them. Learn about health, safety, grooming and more. • Butterflies through Binoculars — 1-2:30 p.m. at Castalia Quarry MetroPark, 8404 Ohio 101, Castalia; Walkups are welcome, and registration is not required. Explore the butterflies at Castalia Quarry MetroPark. Instead of nets, we will be using binoculars to view these beautiful creatures. This walk will be around 2 miles with some hills, so please wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes. A water bottle is also recommended. Feel free to bring your own binoculars or borrow one of ours, while supplies last. • Train rides — 10 a.m. to noon at Community Foundation Preserve at Eagle Point, 3819 Cleveland Road W., Sandusky; Walkups are welcome, and registration is not required. The Erie Metro Live Steamers will have miniature steam-powered engines available to pull passengers through the park. Fun for all. • Park Pals — 10:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Roger Johnson Nature Center; All children must be accompanied by adults. Come play a game of bingo to learn more about the park. We will also read a story, take a walk, weather permitting, and make a craft. • Nature Baby — 10-10:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at Castalia Quarry MetroPark; It's for children up to 3 years old. Siblings welcome. Walkups are welcome, and registration is not required. Come have some butterfly fun with Miss Cheryl and Miss Carly from the Sandusky Library. We will go on a short walk with Miss Cheryl then read stories and sing songs about butterflies with Miss Carly. • Birds & Coffee — 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 28 at The Enchanted Cottage, 4011 Cleveland Road W., Huron; This program is intended for adults.
