Woman charged with strangulation

NEW LONDON — A New London woman is facing a felony indictment after allegedly assaulting a family member. Shaye A. Arison, 36, is facing two felony counts of strangulation and one felony count of domestic violence. The domestic violence charge was enhanced from a misdemeanor to a felony due to a previous conviction in July 2016, according to the indictment. Just before midnight on July 28, officers were called to a New London Avenue home for the report of an active domestic violence situation. When officers arrived, the involved parties were separated. The victim told officers they were upset over a lost hair clip after returning from vacation, according to a New London police report. They said this sparked an argument with Arison. At one point, the parties separated but Arison allegedly ran into the room the victim was in, grabbed them by the legs and dragged them out of the chair to begin assaulting them. A third household member intervened and got the two separated momentarily but Arison allegedly re-engaged the victim. At that point, Arison allegedly began to throttle the victim, who told officers that they began to lose consciousness, could not breathe and was also kicked in the head, the report states. Officers did not locate any injuries on Arison; however, using an ultraviolet light, a bruise was observed on the victim's neck. The victim was also evaluated by medical personnel. Arison was arrested for strangulation and domestic violence and transported to Huron County Jail. Arison was arraigned on Monday and entered not guilty pleas. She was released on a $10,000 signature bond. That means she was not required to post any money with the court to secure her release. Her first pre-trial is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 in Huron County Common Pleas Court. A jury trial is scheduled to commence at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.
