Report: Drunk driver crashes into police cruiser

PERKINS TWP. — A Clyde man was arrested late Friday after allegedly crashing his truck into a Perkins police cruiser. At about 11:15 p.m., a Perkins police officer was turning left from westbound Strub Road onto southbound Milan Road (U.S. 250). At the same time, a 19-year-old Clyde man, while driving a pickup truck, allegedly ran a red light while traveling southbound on Milan Road and struck the officer's cruiser. Due to a Perkins officer being involved in the crash, the state patrol investigated the incident. Neither driver was injured, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol report. Both vehicles suffered functional damage. The cruiser was towed from the scene. The report does not indicate if the truck was towed. The alleged at-fault driver provided a sample for a breath alcohol test, which showed his level was more than twice the legal limit, according to the report. He was arrested and charged with OVI and failure to yield from a red light. Perkins police announced the incident through its social media page. "Last night, while on patrol, one of our Perkins Township police officers' vehicle(s) was struck by an impaired driver. Thankfully, everyone involved is okay and no one was injured," the post states. "Incidents like this are a sobering reminder that driving under the influence puts lives at risk, yours, your passengers', and the lives of others on the road, including first responders who are out there to keep you safe." Perkins police urge all drivers to make the right choice: don't drink and drive. "Your decisions behind the wheel matter. Let's all do our part to keep our community safe," the post states. The driver was arraigned in Sandusky Municipal Court on Tuesday. His plea was not recorded in the court's online docket as of late Tuesday. His next court date is not listed.
