A view of revamped visitor's center

PUT-IN-BAY —Ottawa County Improvement Corp. officials joined in with many others on the recent celebration for the Aquatic Visitors Center on Put-in-Bay. Officials described the site as "a historic gem with a fresh new chapter," the corporation noted. "Originally serving as the state fish hatchery from 1907 to 1988, this facility played a vital role in protecting Lake Erie's rich aquatic life by raising a variety of fish species," according to the corporation. In 1992, the building was converted into a visitor center. Fast-forward to this past week, and, "It transformed into an interactive learning hub, featuring educational exhibits, hands-on activities and its very own fishing pier," according to the corporation. "The inside of the center is updated with interactive displays and exhibits that showcase Lake Erie's great and historically significant fishing for species, such as walleye, smallmouth bass and yellow perch," according to a statement from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. "Additional improvements include addressing longstanding structural problems, enhancing waterproofing and building a (handicap)-accessible ramp and entrance." And exhibits "highlight the visitor center's history as a fish hatchery and features a live fish viewing tank," it added. "The displays also show the life cycle of a walleye, South Bass Island's natural history and ecosystem, aquatic research and conservation efforts." The Ohio General Assembly, providing $6.2 million, covered costs for this revamp. "The Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitor Center will welcome guests to South Bass Island for many years to come," said Kendra Wecker, the natural resources department's division of wildlife chief. "The visitor center is a great launching point for adventures across Lake Erie: The Walleye Capital of the World." Admission is free for families and visitors alike. The opening of the new Aquatic Visitor Center "really highlights all the opportunities for recreation available right here," DeWine said. "Whether it's enjoying the exhibits or fishing from the dock, there's something for everyone in Ohio, the heart of it all." Ohio Department of Natural Resources director Mary Mertz also showed up, offering a similar viewpoint to DeWine's. "The new visitor center is a great location for anglers and others to learn about Lake Erie's natural resources and the work that goes into conserving them," Mertz said. "The Put-in-Bay Aquatic Visitor Center connects future generations with Lake Erie's excellent fishing and highlights the importance of preserving water quality for the millions who get their drinking water from the lake."
