PREP ROUNDUP: PC shuts out Nowalk in girls tennis opener

NORWALK — Port Clinton shut out Norwalk 5-0 on Friday in an Ohio Tennis Coaches Association girls tournament match. It was the season opener for both Sandusky Bay Conference teams. PC coach Joe Miller was pleased with what he saw from the Redskins, who did not lose a set. "Norwalk probably has the most consistent tennis program in our area, and they'll compete for a league title in the SBC Lake Division," Miller said. "On top of that, it was a morning match and our first official match of the year. However, our girls were up for the challenge. "We had to grind out a couple of the matches, but I was thrilled with our energy and effort." Port Clinton returns to Norwalk for the Norwalk Invitational on Saturday. Mason Dawson shot an 86 and Adler Ames carded an 88. Clyde finished second in the six-team field with a 354 while Huron was third with a 365. Clyde's Nico Carroll and Huron's Grant Humphrey each shot an 81. On the first playoff hole to determine medalist, Humphrey scored a birdie to take the honors. Mitch Newsome added an 85 for the Fliers while Paul Murray shot an 88 for Huron. St. Paul shot a 409 to finish fourth. Mason Beatty led the Flyers with an 86 while Connor Polachek shot 87. Port Clinton was fifth with a 423. Derek Holly led the Redskins with a 95. SMCC 2nd at Lakota Invite FREMONT — St. Mary Central Catholic finished second at the Lakota Invitational at Sycamore Hills, finishing with a 323. Fremont Ross won the event with a 322. Senior Blake Finneran led the Panthers with a 75, tying for second overall. Freshman Joey Finneran carded an 80 to tie for seventh. Leo Will (83) and Pravir Gorty (85) rounded out the scores for the Panthers. Vermilion takes 3rd at Bob-O-Links AVON — The Sailors checked off two team goals with a total under 300 and four scores in the 70s at Bob-O-Links Golf Course. Vermilion finished with a 299, good for third place. Sam Riddle and Noah Penton each fired a one-over round of 72. Brady Myers made his varsity debut and shot a 77 while Adam Gerber finished with a 78. Bellevue finishes 5th at L-B ARLINGTON — Sam Cooper shot a 79, leading the Redmen to a fifth-place finish in the tough Liberty-Benton Invitational at Sycamore Springs. Bellevue finished with a team total of 334. Van Buren won the event with a 318. Blake Sutherland added an 80 for the Redmen while Jackson Decker carded an 87 and Preston Spurlock tallied an 88. GIRLS GOLF Perkins 2nd at Woodmore invite ELMORE — Perkins shot a 381 to finish second in the 16-team Woodmore Invitational at Sugar Creek Golf Course. The Pirates' Ireland Hart earned medalist honors with a 76, edging Fremont St. Joseph's Ryan Dickman by one stroke. Also scoring for Perkins was Maycee Bohn (96), Lucy Miller (102) and Makenna Marianek (107). Danbury finished fourth at 397. Miranda Evans (94) and Ashley Lewis (96) led the Lakers. Clyde was sixth with a 403. Samantha Young shot an 81 for the Fliers. Huron finished ninth at 415. Ashtyn Spooner shot an 82 for the Tigers. Ava McFee added a 94 and Lindsay Wainwright carded a 95. Margaretta was 11th at 425. Ellyse and Ellaynah Schaefer led the Polar Bears with a 92 and 96, respectively. Port Clinton's Lillie Fox shot a 100 to lead the Redskins. Hopewell-Loudon won the tournament with a 367.
