Sandusky Library names new director

SANDUSKY — Sandusky Library's new director is William Rutger, a Castalia native who is the current director of Avon Lake Public Library. Rutger will start Sept. 15. His salary will be $120,000, said Martha Murray, the library board's vice president. He's the son of Back to the Wild founder Mona Rutger. His first library job was a teenage job at Sandusky Library, serving as a page who shelved books at the library. Rutger told the Register he got his "interest and dedication in public service" from Back to the Wild. "Sandusky Library shaped who I am, and now I have the privilege to give back," Rutger said. "I'm committed to building on its legacy by creating a welcoming destination that sparks curiosity, strengthens connections, and ignites community pride." Before his Avon Lake job, which he took in 2017, Rutger was a library director in Milan and Ashland, and he also worked in academic libraries. He has a master's degree in library science from Wayne State University. Rutger replaces Molly Carver, who retired on June 1 after 10 years as Sandusky Library's director. Katie Corcoran has been serving as the library's interim director. "I look forward to seeing where William will lead the library next," Corcoran said.
