A 'Sweet' addition to area

PERKINS TWP. — It's a real treat for Jim McMahan to expand his business, Sweets & Geeks, into the local area. "It's like a neighborhood candy store meets Comic-Con," store owner Jim McMahan said. "We've got something for everyone." McMahan recently brought his company's fourth Ohio-based location, and its newest, to the Sandusky Mall, 4314 Milan Road (U.S. 250), Sandusky. Founded in Medina five years ago, McMahan said it mixes geek culture and sweet treats to communities throughout Ohio. Many people took notice of this unique blend, including the mall's management and development teams. "They visited our Medina location and thought we'd be a perfect fit for Sandusky," McMahan said. "We're excited to be here and to become part of the community." Welcoming everyone from toddlers to seniors, the store takes pride in being a space where all ages feel like they belong. Sweets & Geeks offers a wide selection of candy, Pokémon and sports trading cards, anime merchandise, gag gifts and collectibles. "We import unique items from around the world — things you won't find in big box stores," McMahon said. "Whether you're into geeky snacks, nostalgic candy or just want to spend time with family, there's something here for everyone." Imported from all around the world, the candy, snacks and drinks are unique in many aspects. They range from Dubai chocolate to Japanese sodas. Beyond retail, the company is deeply committed to community engagement, McMahan said. "We've really shifted a lot of our advertising dollars into giving back: supporting local baseball teams, organizing golf outings and handing out donation baskets," McMahan said. "It's become a core part of who we are." With a full-time community manager on staff, Sweets and Geeks regularly donates and gets involved with the community. "We've pulled back on traditional advertising so we can give more directly to the community," McMahan said. "That's what matters most to us."
