Unemployment low in Erie County

SANDUSKY — Unemployment in Erie County was relatively low compared to most of Ohio's 88 counties when state officials released new unemployment numbers for June. Erie County's unemployment rate in June was 4.7%. The county ranked 62nd among the 88 counties, according to figures released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Thanks to the role tourism plays in supporting jobs, Erie County's unemployment rate tends to be higher in the winter than in the summer, Across Ohio, county unemployment rates ranged from a high of 7.2% in Meigs County to a low of 3.8% in Holmes County. Ohio's unemployment rate in June was 4.9%, unchanged from May. The state's unemployment rate was 4.3% in June 2024, so it was up from a year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate in June was 4.1%, down from 4.2% in May and unchanged from June 2024. As for other counties in the area, unemployment rates in June were: • 5.6% in Sandusky County • 5.2% in Seneca County • 5% in Ottawa County • 4.8% in Huron County • 5.1% in Lorain County. U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer said the latest national numbers show that the economy remains strong. "Last month's strong jobs numbers show that our economy continues to surge under President Trump's leadership," Chavez-DeRemer said. "Month after month, economic indicators confirm that the great American comeback is in full swing," Chavez-DeRemer said. "Thanks to President Trump's bold America First agenda, 147,000 jobs were created just this month, beating expectations for the fourth month in a row with more on the way as businesses bring production back home."
