Pedal company propels forward

SANDUSKY — The vehicle tops out at 6 mph. But their business has accelerated at far greater speeds than either owner-operator originally expected. Spouses Brittany and Derrick Arbogast debuted the Sandusky Pedal Co. in May. Ever since then, many people have hopped aboard their massive 14-passenger party bike, which transports people mostly around downtown Sandusky — like to bars, restaurants and other notable points of interest — with some nearby city stops sprinkled in within two-hour tour blocks. "It's a great way to connect with people, friends, those who you haven't seen in a while, like college buddies, or just going out with the family," said Brittany, noting group sizes can range from two to 14 people. This could include parties for bachelors, bachelorettes, birthdays, anniversaries, team building, bar crawls and day trips. A friend of the Arbogasts started a similar business in Tiffin. And when Brittany and Derrick, who are parents of four young children — Emmary, Josie, Leo and Lincoln — would venture to Sandusky for a date night, they believe such a business would work well. "We went on rides in Tiffin and always had a blast and figured we could do something similar here," said Derrick, who lives in the Bellevue area with Brittany. "We love the downtown." And people seemingly enjoy Sandusky Pedal Co. The Arbogasts bought this party bike new and built it, specifically, to fit their vision. "At first, we were hoping to average four rides per week. Though in one week, we had 10 rides. And in another, we had six," Derrick said. Brittany credited the community for overwhelmingly supporting their new company. This marks the first venture as entrepreneurs for both: Derrick works as a beer and wine salesman, while Brittany is a stay-at-home mother. "We are so appreciative of everyone," Brittany said. Anyone can hop aboard the party bike, which is a family-friendly attraction. People can pump their feet, as pedals can be found beneath each passenger seat, to help move this electric-powered vehicle. "It's also very safe," Derrick said. "With all the people we've had, no one has been injured on our bike." Both Brittany and Derrick envision extending their business season into the fall and winter months. "We are going to try and go year-round as much as possible," Derrick said. "We are working on doing some Santa stops and visiting Christmas bars. We also want to find a way to stream football games on here."
