Heatwave incoming

Mother Nature's turning up the heat once again. Next week's forecast in the Sandusky/Norwalk area is predicting sizzling temperatures and sky-high humidity. Residents are urged to prepare for a prolonged and potentially dangerous heatwave forecasted to impact the area from Tuesday through July 26. According to 13abc meteorologist Ross Ellet, the heat is expected to intensify midweek with Wednesday and Thursday forecasted to be the hottest days. Daily RealFeel Temperatures — a measure developed by AccuWeather that factors in humidity, wind, sun, intensity and more — are expected to exceed 95 degrees each day, peaking at 102 degrees on Thursday. Here's a breakdown of the projected RealFeel highs: • Tuesday — 96 degrees • Wednesday — 101 degrees • Thursday — 102 degrees • Friday, July 25 — 97 degrees • Saturday, July 26 — 101 degrees High humidity levels will contribute to the oppressive conditions with dew points possibly reaching between 75 degrees and 80 degrees. For context, the dew point is a measure of moisture in the air — when it climbs above 70 degrees, the air feels extremely sticky and uncomfortable. In addition to RealFeel, the heat index — which combines air temperature and relative humidity — will likely top 100 degrees on multiple days. The UV index is also expected to be dangerously high, reaching 10 (very high) on four of the five days, and 9 (high) on the remaining day. "It is possible to get some thunderstorms with this pattern as well, especially late next week." Ellet wrote in a Facebook post. Tips to stay safe and cool During an extended heat event like the one forecast, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency recommends the following precautions: • Weather-proof your home by insulating doors and windows and keeping curtains or blinds closed during the day. • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially during peak heat hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Stay hydrated and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. • Protect pets and livestock by ensuring they have access to fresh water and shade • Check on vulnerable individuals, including older adults, those with chronic illnesses and people with limited mobility • Know where to cool off: Good places would include public libraries, malls, recreation centers and community pools can serve as cooling centers.
