Dedicated to dogs for 50 years

PERKINS TWP. — To commemorate her 50 years of public service, specifically in caring for and adopting out dogs, Erie County commissioners honored longtime dog warden Barb Knapp with a special proclamation. On Thursday, commissioners declared July 10 as Barb Knapp Day "in honor of her 50 years of service to Erie County," according to a joint statement. "Your unwavering commitment, exceptional work ethic and many contributions over the past five decades have made a lasting impact," according to her proclamation. Her first day with the pound occurred on July 10, 1975. She's not retiring, however, still remaining hyper-focused on her job: providing welcoming homes for dogs, safeguarding pups in her custody while at the pound and finding loose canines to ensure they're not at harm. "Barb has served our community. Her love for animals does not go unnoticed," according to a statement from the pound. Knapp said her greatest memory is "always finding stray dogs their loving, forever homes." Provide for the pups In July, to celebrate Knapp's milestone work anniversary, Erie County commissioners seek people to donate items to their office or the dog pound, both located at 2900 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, beside the fairgrounds. People can drop off the items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Among the items sought: dog food, including chicken and rice; pork chomp chews; Amazon gift cards; leashes; medium and large dog collars; bleach; laundry soap; paper towels; donations to its medical fund; and beds for all sizes of dogs.
