Schafer named volleyball coach at Vermilion

Sawyer Schafer has learned from some of the best. The 2019 Monroeville graduate didn't play volleyball in high school. But he helped out during his four years with an Eagles program that saw vast success. Schafer also played with the Vanguard Volleyball Club. Schafer cited current Eagles head coach Kendra Snook, along with Bill Orwig, Jackie Roth, Lily Gregory, Greg Reitz, McKenna Reitz and Bryan Webb as those he's learned from. Now, Schafer will mix that all together and become a head coach himself after being named the head coach at Vermilion on May 16. "What really stood out during the interview process at Vermilion was the sense of community and support from both the school and athletic administration," Schafer said. "It was clear they genuinely care about their student-athletes, not just as players, but as people." Schafer is a first-grade teacher in the elementary building. There, he's able to see the strong community support from administration, teachers and parents. "I've always believed that a strong culture drives a successful program, and that's something I felt immediately at Vermilion," Schafer said. "I wanted to be part of that — to help build on that foundation and bring my passion for the game to a program with such potential." After graduating from Monroeville in 2019, where he also competed in basketball and track and field, Schafer played five years of NAIA volleyball at Lourdes University in Sylvania. He totaled 101 kills in his first two years in 2020 and 2021. Then, he moved into a full-time role as setter, amassing 839 assists in 2022. He did a little bit of everything his final two seasons in 2023 and 2024. "My experiences as a collegiate athlete at Lourdes University — playing multiple positions on the court — gave me a deep appreciation for the game from all angles and a better understanding of what it takes to support athletes in every role," Schafer said. Schafer recently turned 25 years old. A lot of programs have transitioned to hiring younger coaches, but Schafer says that challenge can sometimes just be perception. "Even though I'm younger, I bring valuable experience, leadership and a clear vision," Schafer said. "I've been fortunate to coach at different levels already, and I approach the role with humility and a drive to keep learning and growing right alongside my athletes. "I see my age as a strength in many ways, especially when it comes to connecting with players and bringing fresh energy to the program." Schafer takes over a Sailors team that went 7-16 last year under Maddie Nader. "He was very organized and had a plan for the program," Vermilion athletic director Andy Stillman said. "He brings a different perspective than what we've had in some time. He's learned from some other great coaches and we believe he is ready to build his own legacy. "As for any young coach, they need to learn the administrative side of running a program from your youth to your varsity. We'll help him through that, but he is a smart coach and great teacher so he will pick that stuff up quickly." Vermilion graduated five seniors including first-team Sandusky Bay Conference honoree Claire Bartlome and second-team pick Erin Ellis. "Consistency in culture and athlete development is essential," Schafer said. "My goal is to create an environment where expectations are clear, athletes feel supported, and growth is constant — both as players and as people. "Elevating the program isn't just about adding wins to the record. It's about building confidence, discipline, and a team-first mindset that carries on and off the court." Schafer also said a major focus will be implementing a consistent offseason training plan, and building connections from the youth level to high school. "When these foundational pieces are in place, success on the scoreboard becomes a natural outcome," he said. Sophomore Sophie Habermehl was third on the team with 107 kills last year. Sophomore Sophia Schaffer tallied 76 assists in limited action behind Ellis. "The players have been incredible," Schafer said. "From Day 1, they've been receptive, hardworking and willing to buy into our team. Their energy and willingness to compete and grow as a team have made the transition really smooth. "I'm excited about the leadership within the group and the culture we're continuing to build together." At Monroeville, Snook has 346 career wins with nine district championships, four regional titles and a state runner-up finish in 2022. Schafer got to learn first-hand what it takes to run a consistent, top-notch program every year. That balance is something he plans to carry with him as he takes over at Vermilion. "What I took most from my time as an Eagle was how to build a program with purpose — one where every detail matters," he said. "From the way practices are run to the way relationships are formed. "I also learned the importance of upholding high standards while genuinely caring for your athletes as individuals and sharing your passion for the game with them." Vermilion opens the season Aug. 16 at home against Shelby. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the influence of those coaches and the lessons I've learned along the way," Schafer said. "I'm excited to give my all — not just to the team, but to the school and community. "I want our athletes to know that this journey is about more than volleyball. It's about becoming the best version of themselves and enjoying the process while doing it. I can't wait to get started alongside my incredible coaching staff and this amazing group of girls."
