Fund established for crash victim

PERKINS TWP. — A fund has been established for one of the victims of Saturday morning's car versus bike crash. Just before 2:45 a.m., first responders were called to the 2700 block of Campbell St. for the report of boys who were struck by a car. Three boys were riding a three-wheeled bicycle southbound on Campbell Street, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol media release. One boy was able to jump clear of the bike before it was hit. The other two boys were ejected when the bike was struck. They landed in the northbound lane and suffered severe injuries. None of the boys were wearing helmets, according to the release. One of the boys, Bronx Ahlers, 13, suffered a traumatic brain injury, according to the fundraising website. The Support Bronx's Recovery from Traumatic Injury fund was established on the GoFundMe website. It has a goal of $50,000. As of Monday afternoon, it has raised about $2,300. Alternatively, donations may also be sent by the Venmo application to the account @Angie-Greene-Ahlers. "We are reaching out to those who are able to donate for medical expenses for our boy Bronx," the fund states. It was started by cosponsors Julie Johnson and Angela Greene-Ahlers. Bronx was flown by medical helicopter to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland after being struck, the fund states. In addition to a traumatic brain injury, Bronx also has two lacerations that required 12 staples to close. He also has major contusions on the back of his head as well as many other bruises. He also suffered a fractured left scapula, also known as the shoulder blade. "We are hopeful for his recovery (and) to see B back at playing football for Perkins with his friends and joking with family," the fund states. The family is also collecting photos and cards for Bronx at Pizza Brothers of Sandusky, located at 3708 Columbus Ave. "Prayers are appreciated the most. Thank you so much from our family," the fund states. Alleged drunk driver Joseph P. Fox, 34, of Sandusky, is the driver who allegedly struck the boys as they rode the three-wheeled bike, according to the release. Fox reportedly fled the scene of the crash in a Chevrolet Trax. The vehicle was located in a business parking lot about a half mile south of the crash scene. Fox was allegedly seen walking southbound on Campbell Street near West Stoneway Drive, attempting to hitch a ride. Perkins police officers and Erie County sheriff's deputies searched the area, found and arrested Fox. He was taken to Erie County Jail and incarcerated on felony charges of aggravated vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident. He was additionally charged with two misdemeanors: assured clear distance ahead and OVI. He is scheduled for a 9 a.m. arraignment on Monday in Sandusky Municipal Court. The bike the boys were riding was found to have a functioning rear red light, according to the patrol. Fox was wearing his seatbelt. The vehicle's airbags deployed as a result of the collision.
