Local safety projects receive state funds

MILAN TWP. — State officials accelerated forward with a plan to build two roundabouts and extend a bike path in the local area. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and others recently authorized spending $137.5 million in roadway safety upgrades across the state. In total, it benefits 55 new traffic safety projects in 41 counties, including in Erie and Sandusky counties. "Ensuring the safety of Ohio's roadways is always one of our top priorities," DeWine said. "Whether you're driving or walking, we want every Ohioan to get where they're going safely." Known as Ohio's Highway Safety Improvement Program, this initiative addresses road locations "with a history of fatal or injury crashes where other safety improvements have not been effective," according to a grant statement. Projects range from constructing sidewalks to improving crosswalks, realigning curves, extending bike lanes and installing roundabouts, among others. "These targeted, data-driven investments not only improve safety for local communities but strengthen the transportation system across Ohio," said Pamela Boratyn, director of the state's transportation department. "With the largest highway safety program per capita in the nation, we're seeing real results: traffic deaths have been declining since 2021." Dollars provided through state grants should cover all project expenses: Clyde/Sandusky County • What/Where: Completing a recreational path of about 350 feet, filling in a missing link of the North Coast Inland Trail through downtown Clyde; Also designated as U.S. Bike Route 30, this scenic multi-use trail spans approximately 200 miles across northern Ohio. • How much: $400,000 provided • When: Work should be completed by 2027. Perkins Township/Erie County • What/Where: Installing a roundabout at Hayes Avenue (Ohio 4) and West Strub Road near NOMS Healthcare • How much: $5.5 million provided • When: Work should be completed by 2030. Milan Township/Erie County • What/Where: Installing a roundabout at East Mason and Mudbrook (Ohio 13) roads • How much: $3.7 million provided • When: Work should be completed by 2026.
