Tips on tick prevention

NORWALK — Both Huron County Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health offered some tips about ticks. "Stay tick smart this summer," according to a local health statement. "Ticks can carry Lyme disease and a number of other diseases. But practicing a few protective measures when you're outside can help protect against them." Those tips would include the following: • Walk in the middle of trails while avoiding tall grass, brush and leaf litter • Put on EPA-registered repellents with DEET while following label instructions • Use permethrin for clothing • Wear long pants, long sleeves and long socks while tucking pant legs into socks • Opt for light colors on clothing to make it easier to see ticks • Check your entire body for ticks, promptly removing any found • Shower soon after being outside • Continue doing tick checks two to three days after partaking in outdoor activities • Watch for symptoms, which may include fever, headache, joint pain, muscle aches, fatigue and/or rashes • Tell your health care provider if you do get symptoms • Ask your veterinarian about protection for pets
