Fund established for fire victims

HURON TWP. — A fund has been established for the victims of a Huron Township house fire. "Last night my stepsons — Louis, Bobby and Teddy — lost everything in a devastating house fire at their mom's home," said Madeline Hahn, the fund's creator. "Thankfully, everyone made it out safely, but a lot was lost." The home suffered extensive damage. A portion of the roof caved in. The garage area appeared to be a complete loss. "We're raising funds to help restore a sense of normalcy for the boys in the wake of such a traumatic event," Hahn said. The fund can be found by searching GoFundMe.com for "Support Louis, Bobby and Teddy After House Fire." What happened? Just after 1:30 a.m., first responders were called to the 3900 block of Jane Avenue for the report of a home on fire. A deputy who responded to the scene reported that the house was fully engulfed. Huron firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the roof of the two-story home. All five occupants were reported to be out of the structure. The family dog was also able to escape the flames. They quickly set up hoses to attack the fire from outside. Commanders called for mutual aid from Sandusky as well as the townships of Perkins, Milan and Berlin. Sandusky sent its tower truck. Milan and Berlin township sent their tanker trucks. "It was a difficult fire," Huron fire Capt. Doug Nash said. "There were a lot of big trees in the front that took away our ladder placement. Everything had to be attacked from the ground level." While the cause has yet to be determined, Nash said the fire started in the attached garage. After extinguishing the extensive flames, firefighters left the scene. Just before 7 a.m. on Saturday, they were called back to the home for the report of a significant amount of smoke emanating from the building. Firefighters arrived with a pumper truck and sprayed more water on the smoldering structure. They also brought in an excavator to access the hotspot that was causing the smoke. Both adjacent homes suffered melt damage to the buildings' siding, according to Nash. An official loss of value was not available as of late Saturday.
