'Jeopardy!' run ends for former Register reporter

SANDUSKY — He'll go down in the record books as a two-time "Jeopardy!" champion. Jason Singer, a former Sandusky resident who also worked at the Register, lost on Thursday's episode of America's most popular game show. After winning on Tuesday's and Wednesday's shows, he's going back to his home in Maine with about $48,800. "They taped all three episodes on the same day, and I had trouble sleeping the night before — maybe three hours. Nerves are real," Singer said on Friday. "My brain wasn't working as well as it should've been. Never really had my 'A' game at any point this week. Very frustrating and disappointing." Though he's still very happy with how everything played out. "It's been a wild ride, and it looks like I'll likely be back for the champions wild card tournament later this year," said Singer, who today works as a real estate agent. "I'll learn from this, get better and hope to provide a few more fun nights for everyone down the road." Singer followed the lead of his wife, Susan McMillan, who competed on the show in 2021. McMillan was also a reporter for the Register and Sanduskian. McMillan won $35,000 and came out victorious during her two-episode run. "It's pretty cool Susan and I are both 'Jeopardy!' champions, an incredibly rare feat for a married couple," said Singer, noting it's happened on occasion in the past. "And Sandusky was such a major part of our journey: both the incredible journalists we worked with and all the wonderful people who make up northern Ohio. We wouldn't be the people we are today without Sandusky." Singer referenced the time he and McMillan lived in Sandusky and worked at the Register from 2008 to 2011. Singer covered local government and human interest stories while McMillan primarily concentrated on education. McMillan and Singer watch "Jeopardy!" for many reasons. In no particular order, they're trivia diehards — often hosting game nights with friends — it's a bonding activity, and they can broaden their mindsets with interesting nuggets of information. On Wednesday, the two even appeared on a segment of "Good Morning America" to talk about their wins. Singer expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him during this run. "Thank you to 'Jeopardy!' for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to my amazing wife for inspiring and shaping me and to all my friends and family for all their love and support. Keep learning and keep loving, and I'll hopefully see everyone soon."
