Former Register reporter wins on 'Jeopardy!'

Editor's note: Singer won on Wednesday evening's episode of "Jeopardy!" SANDUSKY — A dominating Double Jeopardy round resulted in a former Sandusky man capturing a win on America's most popular game show. Jason Singer, who also worked at the Register, came out victorious in his debut performance on "Jeopardy!" on Tuesday. Now known as a "Jeopardy!" champion, Singer — who resides in Portland, Maine, and works as a real estate agent— returns tonight (7:30 p.m. on CBS affiliates) for a title defense. "It wasn't my best game, but super, super happy and relieved I was able to still get the 'W,'" Singer said on Tuesday night following his episode's broadcast. Singer referenced his shaky start in the first round. After it ended, he found himself in third, or last, place. But, in the show's second round, he rebounded nicely. Singer located both Daily Doubles, wagered large amounts and successfully answered each question. In total, during this round, he answered 25 questions correctly — nearly doubling the second-place contestant — allowing him to rocket up the leaderboard and take a commanding lead heading into Final Jeopardy. Singer then correctly answered the last question, netting him about $22,400 and becoming an elusive "Jeopardy!" champion. "I've made a lot of mistakes in my life and so grateful so many people stuck by me to help me get to this point," he added. "And so thankful to 'Jeopardy!' as well for creating and sustaining this wonderful show and institution that gives so much joy and knowledge to millions of people nightly." Singer is following the lead of his wife, Susan McMillan, who competed on the show in 2021. McMillan was also a reporter for the Register and Sanduskian. McMillan won $35,000 and came out victorious during her two-episode run. "It's pretty cool Susan and I are both 'Jeopardy!' champions, an incredibly rare feat for a married couple," said Singer, noting it's happened on occasions in the past. "And Sandusky was such a major part of our journey: both the incredible journalists we worked with and all the wonderful people who make up northern Ohio. We wouldn't be the people we are today without Sandusky." Singer referenced the time he and McMillan lived in Sandusky and worked at the Register from 2008 to 2011. Singer covered local government and human interest stories while McMillan primarily concentrated on education. McMillan and Singer watch "Jeopardy!" for many reasons. In no particular order, they're trivia diehards — often hosting game nights with friends — it's a bonding activity, and they can broaden their mindsets with interesting nuggets of information. On Wednesday, the spouses appeared on a segment of "Good Morning America" to talk about their wins. Because of a non-disclosure agreement each contestant signs, preventing spoilers from leaking out, Singer couldn't reveal any results. It's unknown how long his streak will continue.
