Fund established for fire victims

SANDUSKY — A fund has been established for the victims of a June house fire. It benefits victims of a June 28 house fire in Sandusky. "My family's kitchen burned down," said Lisa Long, the fund's creator. "After this situation, we are struggling financially and need as much help as we can get," Long said. The fundraiser can be found by searching for "Support a Family Recovering from Fire Tragedy" at gofundme.com The fire Just after 11 p.m. on June 28, first responders were called to the 1700 block of Mills St. for the report of a house fire. They arrived to find smoke emanating from the home. All three occupants were out of the home and uninjured when firefighters arrived. It was later discovered that the blaze started in the kitchen, according to Sandusky fire Capt. Jason Roesch. A male resident was frying fish in the kitchen when he went outside to speak with neighbors, according to a Sandusky fire report. When he reentered the home, he discovered the kitchen was on fire. "It is believed at this time that the fire was started by unattended cooking by a possible impaired person and that it was unintentional," the report states. It was noted that the man was consuming alcohol while answering Roesch's questions. Several pets were rescued by firefighters, however, some of them ended up dying, despite the best efforts to revive them. The first pet out was a cat named Dot. After firefighters gave Dot oxygen, she was returned to her owners' care. A small dog was brought out and administered oxygen through a pet rescue mask. Firefighters also gave the dog water. After several minutes of rescue efforts, the dog was saved. The Red Cross assisted the family with a place to stay following the fire. Total loss to the property and contents was estimated at $30,000, the report states. No firefighters were injured.
