Man struck, killed by train

FREMONT — A man is dead after he was struck by a train in Fremont on Monday night. Just after 11 p.m., railroad officials notified Fremont police that a southbound train struck a pedestrian, according to a police press release. Mark Traver, 55, was walking on the tracks just north of the West State Street crossing, the release states. The train managed to stop about 1,500 feet south of the crossing, before reaching the Miles Newton Bridge. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Traver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police closed both the State Street and Hayes Avenue crossings while an investigation was conducted. Sandusky County coroner Dr. Mark Smith went to the scene and ordered an autopsy. Police officials do not suspect foul play, the release states. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Traver's family as well as the Norfolk and Southern conductors and staff that are dealing, first-hand, with the loss of a loved one and tragic event," Fremont police Chief Derek Wensinger said. Questions about Traver's city of residence and how long the crossings were closed were not answered by Fremont police as of late Tuesday. May 18 incident Further south on the same set of tracks was the site of a fatal pedestrian collision in May. At about 7 p.m. on May 18, four family members were walking on railroad property near the Miles Newton Bridge that carries Hayes Avenue over the Sandusky River. The family members were struck and two adults died. A 5-year-old and a 14-month-old were thrown into the river below. The younger child was rescued by a good Samaritan, who started CPR. The girl was then flown to a Toledo hospital for treatment. Divers recovered the 5-year-old's body from the river at about noon on May 19. The deceased family members, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana, were: • O Ny Zar, 34 • Ram Masan, 50 • Intisar Mi, 5 The youngest child is Arti Kar of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The most recent update on the girl, as of May 29, is that she was moved out of the intensive care unit and was improving, according to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez. Sanchez did not know the girl's current condition as of Tuesday.
