Working to clean up the waterfront

SANDUSKY — This past Saturday, many community members pitched in to clean up downtown Sandusky's waterfront. "Thank you to everyone who showed up," according to a city statement, referring to this collective volunteer effort as a "big success." This marked the latest event in the 2025 Sandusky Love Where You Live Neighborhood Cleanup Series. "These volunteer-led events are designed to bring the community together to help beautify public spaces across the city," the statement read. Want to help? "Cleanups will take place on Saturday mornings throughout the summer and early fall," the statement read, noting each cleanup begins at 9 a.m. and typically lasts about an hour. Supplies will be provided. Community volunteers Susan Zeier and Samantha Smith will continue to alternate as lead organizers. They'll be present at each event to coordinate volunteers and distribute materials. This year's annual series consists of 10 events in total occurring throughout the spring, summer and fall in various locations across Sandusky. Other than the downtown waterfront, past events occurred at Jaycee, Lions and Orland Pace parks. People, including those involved with volunteer groups, are encouraged to attend. Here's a look at this year's remaining events: • July 12 — AMVETS Park; Volunteers should meet at the main ball field. • July 26 — South Side neighborhood; Volunteers should meet at the Churchwell Park pavilion. • Aug. 9 — Farwell Park; Volunteers should meet at Farwell Park pavilion. • Aug. 23 — Huron Park; Volunteers should meet at the Sandusky Greenhouse. • Sept. 13 –Central Park; Volunteers should meet at Central Park shade structure. • Sept. 27 — Various city underpasses: from Tiffin Avenue to Columbus Avenue; Volunteers should meet at the Tiffin Avenue underpass. "The city is still finalizing a few of the host groups for remaining dates," the statement read.
