Police: Man dead near railroad crossing

Update (1:30 a.m.) A man was struck and killed by a train just north of the West State Street crossing, according to Fremont police. The person has been identified. Update (1:05 a.m) The railroad crossings at State Street and the Miles Newton Bridge are both closed. Original story (12:15 a.m.) FREMONT — Late Monday into early Tuesday, area law enforcement officials surveyed the scene in and/or around a Fremont railroad crossing. People on social media are alluding to a possible death happening in that area, but that has not been confirmed by any local official as of 12:15 a.m. Tuesday. "A person has been hit by a train," according to a post from the Black Swamp Storm Intercept Team, which is based just outside of Fremont. "Per scanner traffic, the person is deceased, and the coroner has been called." When the Register called a Sandusky County dispatcher, the 911 employee referred to an incident as an "active investigation" and referenced Fremont police Chief Derek Wensinger as the point of contact for more information. Many details about the incident — including its exact location, what happened and if anyone has died — remain unknown as of this article's posting date and time. An email was sent to Wensinger for more information. Less than two months ago, on May 18, three people died in a train-versus-pedestrian crash at the Miles Newton Bridge at the Hayes Avenue railroad crossing on the Miles Newton Bridge. Mayor Danny Sanchez said a family from Indiana was fishing when struck by the train. "In my opinion, it is not common for pedestrians to be there," he said.
