Research reserve reminds residents, guests of rules

BERLIN TWP. — Those representing Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve recently posted a public service announcement on the group's Facebook page to remind people about the Huron-area site's rules. "To our visitors and supporters: We have seen an increase in unauthorized use of the preserve beach," the post read. Some people might get confused, considering Old Woman Creek's water quality is typically listed on a daily beach water quality report published by the Erie County Health Department. This could give the "impression that swimming is allowed." But, in short, it's not. "This is a gentle reminder to all who visit: Old Woman Creek Reserve is a very special place," the post read. "This location has one of the last remaining natural estuaries on the Great Lakes. Our location was chosen not only as a state nature preserve but as a National Estuarine Research Reserve to act as a protected living laboratory for water quality and wetland research." As such, rules are set up to preserve the coastal ecology and habitats of Old Woman Creek. Volunteers and representatives then reminded people of the area's rules. The following is prohibited: • Swimming or wading • Pets of any kind • Camping or picnicking • Fires or sand digging/trenching • Collecting of any natural objects, living or non-living, including rocks, driftwood and sand • Hunting or fishing • Beaching of watercraft or launching from the beach; Any paddling requires a permit. "While these limitations may upset a few folks, Ohio is home to many beautiful beaches where recreation is not as restricted," the post read.
