Hoping for productive conversations

After reading the recent editorials ("Guerra is the perfect pick," June 4, 2025 Sandusky Register; "Erie County deserves better," June 26, 2025 Sandusky Register) from the president of our commission over the past few weeks, I feel compelled to clarify things for residents of the city of Sandusky. I want to note that the rest of the commission has not been consulted publicly or privately regarding the issues that Mr. Brady is discussing in these editorials. I have much respect for Dick Brady's service to the city of Sandusky over the past twelve years. He's been involved in many successes of the city over that time. He's also been a community leader for decades before that. I have been hesitant to comment out of this respect. But due to his persistence, I feel a need for our residents to have clarity on the city's role in these issues. Shores and Islands is a critical partner for the city. I appreciate all they do for our local businesses, especially in downtown Sandusky. A vibrant visitor's bureau focused on driving tourism is crucial for the downtown's success in the years to come. It should also be noted that those seeking reform are also crucial partners to the city of Sandusky. Senator Theresa Gavarone has been a staunch advocate for Sandusky during her time in the Senate. I don't believe her intention is to take away from the positive things happening in our community. The same is true for the county commissioners. There are a few prominent examples of increased cooperation between the city and Erie County. But there are so many more opportunities for the city and county to work together in the years to come. The personal attacks aimed at our fellow elected leaders has become unproductive quickly. The city should work within its role as a stakeholder in this process. I hope there can be many productive conversations among our elected officials and stakeholders in the months ahead on some of these issues and many others. And I hope the city of Sandusky will continue its work on the core mission of governing this wonderful community. Kate Vargo Sandusky City Commissioner
