Plane crashes on Kelleys

Updated post 4:45 p.m. KELLEYS ISLAND — Authorities are investigating an airplane crash on Kelleys Island that occurred Friday morning. Just before 11:30 a.m., first responders were called to the Kelleys Island Municipal Airport for the report of a single-engine plane crashing on the runway, according to Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth. The plane had two occupants, identified as a 69-year-old male pilot from Liberty Township, Ohio, and a 67-year-old female passenger also of Liberty Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The plane crashed while it was attempting to take off westbound from the airport, and collided with the ground; no other property was damaged as a result of the crash. Both occupants suffered minor injuries, according to Kelleys Island police Chief James Bartus. They were transported by medical helicopter to a Toledo hospital. The patrol notified the Federal Aviation Administration about the crash, which remains under investigation. Editor's note: This story was updated to reflect occupants' injury status.
