Where kids can be kids

SANDUSKY — A local program is giving kids more than just something to do — it's giving them a place to belong. Summer Break Camp LOL, hosted at Mills School by Sandusky's recreation department, is a structured program where youth can go to enjoy the benefits of being a kid. Designed to provide a safe, engaging and supportive environment for children during school breaks. The camp offers a variety of recreational and educational activities aimed at fostering social development, creativity and well-being among local youth. "We do this because kids need a place to just be kids," Tondra Frisby, the city's youth program supervisor, said while hosting activities on Wednesday. "If they don't learn how to play, they grow up to be not-so-great adults. Here, we teach them how to have fun, be social and feel safe." The camp, which began in 2022 after the Sandusky Rec Department moved into Mills School, now serves 80 to 90 children daily, with over 150 registered. Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, the program is supported by Sandusky Schools, which generously provides lunches, and by community members who donate popsicles and drinks. The program's success is deeply rooted in community support. "Whether it's the fire department helping kids cool off or parents trust us with their precious cargo, it all shows that this community cares about its youth," Frisby said. "Most of my staff grew up in this program. They started as kindergartners and now they're young adults giving back." One such staff member is Ta'Jay Campbell, 17, who's been with the program since age 5. "I remember being one of the kids," Campbell said. "Now I get to help them have fun and even help with homework during the school year. It's a great experience." Also on Wednesday, the Sandusky Fire Department joined the fun, setting up sprinklers and hoses for the kids to play in amid scorching temperatures. "It's nice to be able to help the kids cool down and have fun." Sandusky fire Lt. Dana Portentoso said. As the camp continues to grow, the message remains clear: Sandusky is a city that believes in its children, Frisby said. "We welcome continued support from the community and organizations," she said. "Together, we're creating a space where kids can be safe, have fun and just be kids."
